There are a few new "approved" comments at casa "teh crazy"® that made me chuckle
Your only friend CHELL is trying to join the VBSers at DHD.

The truth sort of hurts, or in this case is really effin funny
Are you back from poughkeepsie?

I love reference humor... Those of you on or reading the mailing list that was referenced in a previous comment should really enjoy this one.

Low level "teh crazy"®, but I takes what I can gets...

You know, all things considered, I don't know who the heck said I was Deb's "friend." Yuh, read a blog, post a comment, bam! Insta friend! And I musta missed the sign up form for DHD, 'cause it seemed like just conversation to me. What I've *really* been trying to do on this wasted day is find some way for puny me to get ahead on Eternal Lands (game). Well, in a funny sorta way, that comment will probably ruffle some feathers over there. At least mildly. ;)

At 4:48 PM, Blogger Sinner said...

I'm glad you are here chell. I suspect some minds were changed today, yours included.

At 4:52 PM, Blogger OttavaRima said...

i'm so sorry everyone, if i am breaking into a conversation.

but i need some grammar help.

in this sentence

blah blah began his post high school education at blah blah

where within "post high school education" do the hyphens go? (according to either cms or ap style).

help me. please.

the people in RL that i normally ask such questions are not available on IM at this time on a friday night.

don't even ask my why i'm still working this late.

it's not worth answering.

At 4:57 PM, Blogger Chell said...

Sinner, you are kind. Yes, I definitely had a chance to see the whole picture (I'm blind! Bliiiiiiind!! Ack!), as well as to chitchat with some good people.

At 5:03 PM, Blogger OttavaRima said...

chell, will you accept my apology for my earlier nasty remarks to you?

keep in mind, i still don't place much stock in "standards" where html is concerned, considering that it changes so constantly and i was once a web developer who was forced to code with at least three versions of browsers on at least two platforms in mind.

just someone please help me with my hyphen question and i'll go away and leave you all alone.

Try post-high school education.

Works with post-middle school education, so I would go with that formulation.

At 5:07 PM, Blogger Rabbit said...

Otta, I went down to where Brenda was & asked her to come up here. I don't know if she's still on or not.

At 5:09 PM, Blogger BrendaK said...

Ottava -

I believe it is "post-high school" but I don't have the reference material on hand to be better than 92% sure.

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Hawksp said...

Hi Chell,

Copied from last thread for sinner.

"BTW, I was considering Linux.

Do you have a minute to give a brief opinion?"

At 5:10 PM, Blogger BrendaK said...

Hey, rabbit -

Still here, I answered on wrong thread first time.

At 5:12 PM, Blogger Chell said...

Otta, no apology necessary, but if you like, I will accept if you will accept mine. *offers handshake* It's incredibly frustrating, the hoops we have to jump through to write "proper" code, yet keep all those browsers happy. Has me rippin' my hair out at times. Joe's suggestion looks right, although I'm no expert. Hope you finish with the tedious stuff soon.

At 5:13 PM, Blogger Rabbit said...

LOL I did that on Hosedragger's site. Felt like an idiot! LOL

At 5:19 PM, Blogger Chell said...

Hawk, definitely try Ubuntu. I'm kinda a Linux n00b, but my earlier DOS years makes it easier. I used to think Mandrake was all that, but Ubuntu rawks! It's far more stable and secure than Windows, less "clunky," and it's exactly what you make of it. Beware though, some hardware support is spotty or nonexistent on Linux. For instance, I had to purchase a $20 driver to make my winmodem a linmodem. :( And my all in one printer won't scan on this OS. It prints, after some tweaking, so that's fine. Hmm, will have to go peek at that other thread now. Please forgive my slow replies. Stinkin' dialup.

At 5:25 PM, Blogger Hawksp said...

Well I guess after dropping 239 smackers after rebate (saved 170) on my Binford 2000 7.5 HP All-in-one Epson RX700 printer, if Linux doesn't play well, I'll stick to XP. Thanks Chell and Joe

At 5:30 PM, Blogger Chell said...

Hawk, don't give up so fast tho. You can try some flavors of Linux without installing them. Ubuntu is one of these. You just run it from the CD. And they will send you CD's for free, if you have a month or so's worth of patience. If you like it, you can install it, alone or alongside another OS like Windows.

I think the rest of the crew is on it's way to this thread.

Plus, a special treat! We may be joined by travelin' trawlin' troll beau.

Fresh from AbbeyWeb listserv, and with lots of arrogance to spare, everyone please give beau a special DHD welcome.

Have you given any more thought to Wife Swap (trading spouses)???

I still say you're a good person! Don't change.

May not agree 100% with your politics - but can't deny you have a good heart.

I see chell has pimped Ubuntu and that is really good advice. Personally, I like KDE so I usually go with the Ubuntu offshoot KUbuntu.

These come out of the Debian line and are very stable and super easy to set up. KUbuntu is a single disk, but you best have a good net connection because you are going to be downloadin'

As for your printer, HP is very well supported under Linux. My bizzare Lexmark z82 all in one has a driver, so a common printer like yours should also be out there.

It wouldn't hurt to check before you leap, but I would certainly give it a try.

One less Microsoft install is a good thing.

Of course, my main system is XP because I write games... Can't really make a living at Linux games...

Oh, no. No, no, no-oo-ooooooh. Good borwniens.

At 5:42 PM, Blogger OttavaRima said...

thanks for the hyphen help, all. my linguistic pee aitch dee friend in ohio just confirmed: you're right!

post-high school, it is!

(not that we needed a pee aitch dee to confirm.)

i'm an idiot for having to ask, but it IS friday night, and i DID just get a random email from a client after i had two (count 'em two) glasses of pinot grigio with dinner.

it takes a certified genius to answer hyphen questions after two glasses of wine. and certified genius i ain't. i'll cop to that right now.

At 5:46 PM, Blogger Rabbit said...

BrendaK, I have a true story involving cats, illegal brownies, 2 18yrs old ,a flasher in a park & the police! It's too much to type here, can I put it in your comments on your blog when I have time to type it?

At 5:47 PM, Blogger SBH said...

Otta, Post highschool is a prepositional phrase -- no hyphens at all. That would create a compound hyphenated word which doesn't exist.

Try "collegiate" education unless it was a trade school they went on to.

At 5:48 PM, Blogger BrendaK said...

rabbit - please do!

sinner - gosh, don't you guys like us crashing in on you?

At 5:51 PM, Blogger BrendaK said...

LOL! Barney, the TV camera may catch the backs of my heels now and then as I dodge it, so wife swap is a no-go. ;) Not many people are 100% aligned regarding politics, but all that matters is we can come to terms, or maybe agree to disagree. Thanks for the kind remark- partially today has hurt my heart, because I saw a side of someone that was so black and confused. Good to run into you here. You and the others here have brightened the evening. :)

Sinner, please, if you can make great games for Linux you will be considered a god. LOL! And silly me thought the only reason to keep a Windoze partition was for the Sims. I did snag a couple of KDE programs for this Linux install. Nice to have the option, no?

"You can try some flavors of Linux without installing them."

Yeah I went to the site and read that, but it's a big download. I'll try it one night when the server is slow."

"My bizzare Lexmark z82 all in one has a driver, so a common printer like yours should also be out there."

That was my last printer, sinner. I ruined it trying to refill the ink myself.

I might try the Linux with the daughters old desktop before I try it on mine.

My NCO went finished and went home so I'm otta here too. Thanks for all the advice.
